The House of Representatives wants persons convicted of economic and financial crimes to be sent to jail for at least 20 years.
This is part of details of new amendments to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act.
For now the Act prescribes a penalty of “not less than 2 years” for economic and financial crimes.
Lawmakers consider this to be “lenient” for the serious crime of stealing public money or other forms of financial crimes being committed by looters.
Four consolidated bills before the House are seeking to further empower the EFCC to fight crime, insulate the anti-graft agency from interference by the Presidency and enhance its autonomy.

Nigerian Born Mo Adeniran Is Crowned Winner Of The Voice UK
After months of stellar performances, battle rounds and public votes,
Nigerian born Mo Adeniran was crowned the winner of The Voice UK during
Sunday night's live final.
Whilst the show was disrupted by a stage invader and Tom Jones accidentally swearing on air, nothing could detract from the 21-year-old's joy as he beat Welsh duo Into The Ark to be named the winner.
Flabbergasted as the result was announced, Mo looked on in shock whilst his mentor Jennifer Hudson immediately burst into tears of happiness.
It was no doubt a bittersweet moment for Jennifer, whose second act Jamie Miller finished in third place. Tom Jones' group Into The Ark were the runners-up. Big congrats to him.
