The newly-appointed United Nations Secretary General’s special representative on the abduction of the Chibok Schoolgirls, Ambassador Said Djinnit has held consultations with the presidential fact-finding committee on the abduction.

A statement by the committee’s spokesman, Kingsley Osadolor, quotes Ambassador Djinnit, as pledging the union’s support in the search and rescue of the schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State.

He also told the committee that beyond the outrage and global condemnation of the abduction, the United Nation’s Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon is interested in a support package to ensure the release of the school girls, and to deal with the larger issues arising from the circumstances of the abduction.

FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets resume training, 35 players in camp

Abuja, May 16, 2014 (NAN) Nigeria’s under -20 women football team, the Falconets, resumed full training on Friday in Abuja in preparation for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup scheduled for Canada in August.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team trained at the FIFA Goal Project pitch at the National Stadium.

The team had qualified for the competition scheduled for Aug. 5 to Aug. 25 after winning all its qualifying matches against Sierra Leone, Tunisia and South Africa.

Six Million Nigerians Reside In Cameroon, Says Envoy

There are about six million Nigerians currently living in Cameroon, Dr Paul Ekorong a Dong, Consul-General, Consulate-General of the Republic of Cameroon, has said.

Ekorong a Dong told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos that many Nigerians were living, doing their businesses and engaging themselves in different jobs in Cameroon.
He said that the increasing number of Nigerians in Cameroon was an indication of Cameroon’s growing relationship with Nigeria.

Controversial Response to Michelle Obama #Bring Back Our Girls

Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK is not taking this lightly at all as their reactions have gone viral and controversial. They are saying that “Your Husband Has Killed More Muslim Girls Than Boko Haram Ever Could, #We Can’t Bring Back Our Dead.”

Too many twists and controversy hovering around the #Bring Back Our Girls story.

This post has received various responses among the members of MPAC as well, with some of them saying that a good cause is a still a good cause, and others supporting his point of view.
The campaign was started to make the world hear about the abducted Chibok girls and has spread worldwide. Over 200 girls were abducted in April 2014 from their school in Chibok and military forces and volunteers have been looking for them ever since.  Meanwhile, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for kidnapping the girls and has just released a video showing supposedly some of them.

According to US network TV NBC, most of the Islamic terror group’s weapons are either stolen from Nigerian military stocks or purchased on the thriving Central African arms black market, say the experts, including current and former U.S. officials.

While many have often wondered where the insurgents source their weaponry from, given both the sophistication and the sheer number, ThisDay reports that the group blamed for last month’s kidnapping of nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls routinely raids police stations and military bases in search of weapons

It was also gathered that in some cases, Boko Haram sympathizers in the Nigerian military abet the theft.

“There are hints that sympathizers in the Nigerian army will deliberately leave doors of armouries unlocked for Boko Haram," said John Campbell, U.S. ambassador to Nigeria from 2004 to 2007.

Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange have released a joint statement about the fight which occurred in a hotel elevator between Jay Z and Solange on Monday, 5th of May, where Solange kicked her sister’s husband several times. The statement was made available to the Associated Press and it reads; “As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it,Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family. The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false.At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

3 JTF Operatives Die, As Jigawa Records 1st Bomb Blast

Barely two  weeks after the signing of a peace agreement between community and religious leaders at the palace of the chairman, Taraba State Council of Chiefs, the Aku Uka, fresh crisis yesterday erupted in Kungana village in  Bali local government area of the state, leaving seven people dead.

A resident of the village, Mr James Gbaa, who spoke to LEADERSHIP  on phone, said   that the armed men identified as Fulani herdsmen, numbering over 29, invaded  the village at about 2am yesterday and engaged in shooting, leading to the death of seven persons.

Details of the cause of the crisis, which LEADERSHIP gathered spilled over from the crisis between the Tivs and Fulani herdsmen in Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states, are not yet known.

Gbaa, who said he narrowly escaped the attack, also said two persons received machete cuts during the attack.

Buhari Warns the Federal Government to Stop Killing Boko Haram Members.

The former Head of Military Ruler, Chieftain of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Federal Government to stop the clampdown of Boko Haram insurgents, saying Niger Delta Militants were never killed or properties belonging to them destroyed.

Buhari who spoke on Sunday on a Liberty Radio programme, Guest of the Week monitored said accused the government of killing and destroying houses belonging to Boko Haram members while the Niger Delta militants get special treatment.

The Truth, Controversy and Identification of 54 Abducted Girls

The recent video of the abducted girls shown has caused multiple controversy. Some Nigerian still doubt the true state of the situation while some believe these whole act is engineered by the Western world to punish Nigeria or penetrate Nigeria's fast growing economy. However, parents have identified 54 girls out of the more than 100 girls shown on the video released recently.

In a video viewing session which took place at the office of the Chief of Staff to Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, the video was played before some of the parents of the girls abducted, teachers, security officers, female students which included some of the girls who escaped from the abductors. With their help, some of the girls shown in the video were identified by their names. The viewing session took place at about 2pm today.

For those who had been there, Sambisa is described as an impenetrable jungle, a potential forest of a thousand demons where vision is impaired literally by poor visibility; insecurity looms and survival is a matter of the fittest. In Sambisa forest, your neighbours are wild animals, serpents or poisonous snakes. It is a hiding place for the daring ones who are more at home in the jungle than in human habitats.

 

In the colonial times, Sambisa was a game reserve, much like the famous Yankari Game Reserve, which used to attract huge traffic. In 1982, Yankari Game Reserve, was the place I wrote my earliest magazine cover story for Dele Giwa’s Sunday Concord, which earned me a lot of kudos from him. I still recall the title Giwa gave the piece: Want To Get Away From It All? Try Yankari.

One Dead, Two Missing in US Hot Air Balloon Fire

Washington:  Searchers have recovered the remains of one of three occupants of a hot air balloon that went up in flames after hitting a power line in the US state of Virginia, police said on Saturday.

The two others were missing in the accident, which occurred Friday night as the balloon was making its descent in a pre-designated field, said Corrine Geller, spokeswoman for the Virginia state police.
