Meet Sir Eugene Hiroshi On The Sketch

Sir Eugene Hiroshi, the muse of the day, quite a heavy one I must say. He was so enthusiastic, he even called me personally to ask what it entailed before the interview. The kind of muse anyone could hope for. Sir Eugene was a brilliant and exciting muse, as you will find out. Beneath all his surface show of unseriousness lies an ingenious man. Beneath the tough exterior was a man of character and a heart full of warmth. Beneath the…let me not bore you. You should see it yourself…

TS: First of all, do you know you’re such fun?
Am I?…
TS: Never mind, lol. Don’t answer that non-question. We wouldn’t want your head skipping a beat. Anyways, welcome to The Sketch, the weekly sometimes fortnightly, sometimes 2-monthly soccer Arena magazine and interview session.
You don come oh… (Muttering)
TS: Because you are new, i’d like to introduce the concept to you.
             Sketch: The magazine
             Muse: The interviewed person
The topic in focus: The theme of your Sketch.
So, you know the two but the third is STRENGTH. Your topic in focus will be ‘strength’.
 Ok
TS:  Do you think you’re a strong man? Which aspect of your strength would you want to be noted for when you’re gone. Mental or physical?
Think?? I know I’m a strong man
I want to be noted for both mental and physical strength.

TS: Interesting…Hmm, please introduce yourself, people are itching already! Remind us of your name?
Sir Eugene Hiroshi Apochi is my name.

TS: Sir Eugene Hiroshi Apochi, catchy! Why Hiroshi?
I was named Hiroshi by a Japanese master. It means “the generous”
TS: Are you from Hiroshima or Okinawa?
(He laughs) I’m from neither

TS: Marital status?
Happily married.

TS: Ok, great. let’s make this first session about quotes of strong men. Hope you know you’re the first muse after a long time, you go answer question taya…
I’m with you

Quote 1:
No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.” –Buddha
TS: What do you think about people who have reached out to you in the past because they can’t help themselves. Is it because you’re strong or because they are weak?
Well people reach out to you for diverse reasons…I wouldn’t say it’s beacause I’m strong or they are weak…

Quote 2:
“Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go.”
-Hermann Hesse
“It doesn’t take a lot of strength to hang on. It takes a lot of strength to let go.”
J. C. Watts

TS: Do you agree that it takes a strong man to know when to give up?
Depends on what you are giving up on…Sir Winston Churchill once said ” never ever give up nothing except to conviction of honour and good sense”..well, I agree a strong man should know when to give up..
TS: Did you ever have to give up something that hurt you so bad but made you stronger?
Yeah, I have given up somethings in the past…it hurt but in the end, it paid off.

Quote 3:
Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
-Mahatma Gandhi
TS: C’mon, Sir E, you’re a body builder, isn’t this like an insult to all of you? I mean, he should have met you in the ring to tell you this, right?..What do you think?
Yeah right..I’m inclined to agree with him to an extent oh. I meet different physical challenges day by day. .I overcome them with my mental strength. ..seeing ur size and all, a street boy would still walk up to you on the street and ask for a fight…”pathetic” I would say…

Quote 4:
“The resistance that you fight physically in the gym and the resistance that you fight in life can only build a strong character.
-Arnold Schwarzenegger
TS: Please, I don’t think I understand. How does gyming affect character. Explain to us please…?
Exercise helps trigger endorphins, which improve the prioritizing functions of the brain. After exercise, your ability to sort out priorities improves, allowing you to block out distractions and better concentrate on the task at hand…there are more that exercise or being in t he gym would help…proven.

Quote 5:
“A truly strong person does not need the approval of others any more than a lion needs the approval of sheep.”
-Vernon Howard
TS: Hmmm, do you see me as a sheep, ehn, Sir E? Afterall, I know you can crush me in a second. *angry*
Haaa! Chief! No I no see you as a sheep..
TS: Ok.(lol)
I believe all men are equal..you should remember the famous quote of Thomas Jefferson…well I also know that whoever sees himself as Alpha, falls easily.
TS: Sir E, do you have respect for and see the point of seeking the opinion of people you are stronger than?
I respect people accordingly…respect begets respect.. yeah its good to seek opinions of people you are stronger than…it brings more respect to you.

Quote 6:
Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.”
-Oprah Winfrey
TS: Personally, (not like things were handed to me free but) my life thus far has not really been a struggle. What about you? Have you struggled to be where you are today?
I would say I have worked hard and smart in the past to get me where I am today..I wouldn’t say struggle per se. ..God has been my present help and all glory goes to Him?

Quote 7:
Only the weak are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong.”
-Leo Buscaglia
TS: Are you a gentle giant or a bully like Aliu?
lol… Aliu is indeed a bully…I was once nicknamed the “gentle giant” I think it’s self explanatory.

Quote 8:
“A strong man doesn’t have to be dominant toward a woman. He doesn’t match his strength against a woman weak with love for him. He matches it against the world.”
-Marilyn Monroe
TS: Interesting…hmmm
Have you ever bullied a woman before? Physically or emotionally? (truth please)?
No! Never. I haven’t bullied a woman physically before. In fact I detest men that bully women physically…emotionally I think I have. Who hasn’t?

Quote 9:
He that is not handsome at 20, nor strong at 30, nor rich at 40, nor wise at 50, will never be handsome, strong, rich or wise.”
-George Herbert
TS: HaaaaaHow true is this please?
I don’t think it’s true…There is this friend of mine I had in the past that was approaching his 60s then and he still said ” Eugene hmm, when I go hammer en” when he was 59 he got extremely rich…I mean he is on top of the food chain as we speak…and then I used to laugh at him when he said those words…I would say” haba bros u don near death pass life o…why u still dey hope to hammer na” so I simply think that it all boils down to belief..
TS: Based on this quote bros, are you in the right place at your stage? Abi you wise at 20, come handsome at 50? Please answer oh…
All things being equal, I think I’m on a journey…life is not perfect herself…

Quote 10:
Willingness to change is a strength, even if it means plunging part of the company into total confusion for a while.”
-Jack Welch
TS: Can you relate this to the past soccer arena election?
I totally agree with that quote..during the FOA elections, I would bet my savings that Aliu would stand by me all the way..but he explained why he wouldn’t and I totally understood..such is life.
TS: Can you dissapoint someone you love just to do what you feel is right or tactical?
Of course.

Quote 11
“The best fighter is never angry.”
-Lao Tzu
Never respond to an angry person with a fiery comeback, even if he deserves it…Don’t allow his anger to become your anger”
-Bohdi Sanders
TS: Please explain to us. From what we watch in movies, the more angry an actor is, the stronger his fight is! But this people think differently. Please tell us, how does anger affect martial art fighting. Does it make you stronger or weaker?
A movie is a different ball game…it’s just make believe…reality is something entirely different. ..the more angry you get, the more you loose..your opponent might defeat you without making a move at you.

Quote 12
A black belt is nothing more than a belt that goes around your waist. Being a black belt is a state of mind and attitude.”
-Rick English
The true value of the martial arts is not in 100 victories but in the perfection of the character of the students.”
-Funakoshi 1922
TS: We hear it a lot, but please explain to we ordinary people how martial art improves character, attitude? What did you learn about yourself through martial art?
(He then went ahead to educate us about martial art)
Some people still associate Martial Arts with violence and deem it a non-appropriate sport for their children or personally. While Martial Arts teaches techniques that are designed to defend yourself or to compete in well structured tournaments, there is much more to it that meets the eye.You gain much more than just a bunch of techniques to hurt others.
When you commence the journey you discover that prevention and de-escalation are the ultimate goals in solving conflict.Learning Martial Arts is a great way to enhance your life. The changes people experience go way beyond the skills they learn in class.
The skills learnt impact people individually, throughout their daily life and have positive impacts on people around them. Taking up Martial Arts lessons is the first step towards a better you…Aliu knows better

Quote 13:
Emotion can be the enemy, if you give into your emotion, you lose yourself. You must be at one with your emotion, because the body always follows the mind.”
-Bruce Lee
Sword and mind must be united. Technique by itself is insufficient, and spirit alone is not enough.”
-Yamada Jirokichi
One mind, any weapon.”
-Hunter B. Armstrong
TS: Hmmm nice “one mind, any weapon” marine Corp phylosophy..impressive. I really don’t understand this one. Please, what does it mean to be of one mind?
Well in my own opinion, one mind simply means focus or concentration. .u can’t achieve your goals distracted…can’t hit your target with ur eyes closed.

Quote 14:
For sportsmen or women who want to be champions, the mind can be as important, if not more important, than any other part of the body.”
-Gary Neville
TS: Explain to us what you feel about winning mentality in football? Is it overrated?
It’s not overated, it can easily be seen when you look at the winners in football. I can even relate with this in my life, as a sportsman “application” , 1st win a match in my mind or achieve my goals in my mind before stepping in the ring…by so doing, victory becomes yours..

And finally,
Quote 15:
“I just hate losing and that gives you an extra determination to work harder”
-Wayne Rooney
“Losing is not in my vocabulary”
-Ruud van Nistelrooy
“I’ve never played for a draw in my life”
-Alex Ferguson
TS: Do you think this mentality still exists in Manchester United?
My opinion about Manchester United ‘s recent losing is just lack of concentration and focus..
   That reminds me,
TS: What led you into supporting Manchester United?
Well, football wise, I’m the old school kinda fan who barely sees much good in the game these days. I have been a Man U fan since the early 90s..the days of Paul ince, Nicky butt, P and G Neville…then soccer was great times of David becham..I liked and support Man. U because my father was a great fan and he made me see reasons why these people were great…

TS: For how many years have you been a united fan?
I have been a united fan since 1994.

TS: Have you suffered anything from supporting your club?
When I was younger I suffered plenty of knocks on my head from my uncle that was a chelsea supporter..lol. If that is not suffering, even martyrdom, Biko, what is?

TS: What is your club’s greatest strength?
Our “WILL” to always make a comeback.

TS: Wat was your happiest day being a fan?
I’m mostly always pleased, I’m not sure I can be specific. .

TS: Who is the first player that comes to your mind anytime you hear the word “strength”?
Ryan Giggs although he is retired now…(the days of good football have passed) my opinion.

TS: Describe your typical “strong player” and what is his strength?
Ryan Giggs, we used to call him “experience workshop” he was one player we called Mr perfect..his passes are very accurate..and his adaptation to both left and right foot was amazing.

TS: If you were a coach, which one will you imbibe in your players more? Physical or mental strength?
More of mental strength, u win in ur mind before getting into the pitch.

TS: Which position in your team do you think needs to be strengthened? If you were in Van Gaal’s shoes what areas will you strengthen to make united title contenders? The strikers and Right back.

TS: How important is strength training to a footballer?
Very important
Today’s soccer performers must be “complete athletes”…They have to be quick off and on the ball and swift.

TS: Does sexual activity affect a player’s strength on the pitch?
Yes it does oh. It does.

TS: Ehen, Sir E, what carried your leg to soccer arena, I mean, how you waka waka reach here?
Aliu brought me here..but I grew the interest 1st and I begged him to add me…
TS: Do you love Soccer Arena? What is your impression so far?
SA is my 2nd family..I love the jokes, bullies, seriousness and soccer updates…but rings me back to my days of soccer…

TS: What if you had somehow won FOA, what would we be enjoying now?
well, I really don’t know the duties of the FOA but I know I will share Richards on daily basis..lol..until I’m tutored on the duties of the FOA.    (See this guy oh)
TS: Who is the strongest arenite in your opinion?
Without thinking chief Nneoma Nocrap.

TS: Name your 3 best soccer arenites and why?
Aliu, by virtue friendship, I love him like a brother and friend I have no choice sef. If I don’t pick him, I fit wound tomorrow lol..and bcos he brought me here..then chief Nneoma Nocrap. .she helps keep the house together..the others, I love the same way..

Kponkpi! It’s an old warri slang that means “relax”

Who be this winch wey ask this thing! I grew up in a home of riddles and Brain basher. ..my father would give cash to whom ever got his riddles correctly…

TS: David asked:
“If you were to be an admin for a week, what would you do differently or what would you change?”
Mehn, the arena doesn’t need change joo..we have rules and constitution guiding us…I mean I’m a law breaker and u want to make me an administrator for a week…wow! We would all live that 1week in a state of anarchy…

TS: Emeka Osari said he wants to know what you do to people that provokes you, as the huge guy you be…?
The funny part is that I don’t get provoked …I can’t remember the last time I got angry..

TS: Aliu Omokafe is giving you “classwork question”, he said you should define “strength” in your own words(10marks)
That guy sha. (Scratches beard) Strength is a collection of attributes that allow a person to persevere through difficult circumstances such as difficult training or difficult competitive situations in games and emerge without losing confidence. Oya, my price!

TS: If you were to “chaik” a chick in the arena, who would it be?
Chief Nneoma Nocrap. (I’m about to drop the mic and run at this point)
