We Are Already Coming Out of Recession – Finance Minister

Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, the Minister of Finance, has said Nigeria is already getting out of the economic recession, given the pragmatic approaches the Federal Government is taking to reverse the trend.

She said this on Wednesday while fielding questions from journalists at the end of a 2-day National Council of Finance and Economic Development conference held at the Green Legacy Resort, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

It was held in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Finance with the theme: ‘Enhancing revenue generation and obtaining best value for money in expenditure.’

Ogun To Build 2nd Largest Refinery In Sub-Saharan Africa

The Ogun State Government has signed agreement with a consortium of four private firms to build a refinery, proposed to be the second largest in sub-Saharan Africa.

The agreement also included the building of the largest petroleum product depot in Nigeria.

The agreement was signed in Abeokuta on Wednesday between the government and four firms: Petrolex Oil and Gas, Hyundai, Ajayi Legal Partners and Wema Bank Plc.

Train Crashes In New Jersey, Kills One Injures 100

A packed commuter train has ploughed into a station in Hoboken, New Jersey, injuring over 100 people and killing one person.

The rush-hour train did not slow down as it entered the station, hit a concrete block and was raised off the tracks, hitting the station ceiling.

Part of the station ceiling has collapsed. Emergency workers are on the scene, helping passengers evacuate the carriages. Many were trapped and injured.

Dozens of ambulances lined up near the station and more than 10 people have been taken to intensive care.

Transgender Couple Become First In The World To Have Their Own Baby

A transgender man who became pregnant after conceiving with his transgender female partner has given birth in what is reportedly a world first.

Now Mr. Fernando Machado, who used to be a woman, and now Ms Diane Rodriguez, who used to be a man, had their first child in June after Fernando gave birth.

The pair are Eduador's first transgender couple to have a baby after meeting on social media more than two years ago. Neither of them had undergone surgery during their gender reassignment process, so becoming pregnant was still possible.

NSCDC Deploys 20,000 Personal For Edo Election

Abdullahi Gana, the Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has directed the immediate deployment of 20,000 personnel for the Edo governorship election scheduled for Sept. 28.

President Muhammadu Buhari today appointed Chief Executives for 13 Federal Government agencies. Bolaji Adebiyi, the Director of Press in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) stated this in a statement in Abuja.

He listed the appointments as follows: Joseph Ari, Director-General, Industrial Training Fund; Isa Ibrahim, Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency; and Simbi Wabote, Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Monitoring Board. Others are: Aboloma Anthony, Director-General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria; Mamman Amadu, Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement; and Sharon Ikeazor, Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.

Ibori Will Spend This Christmas In Nigeria- Delta Chief

Deltans, particularly members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP heaved a sigh of relief when Chief Ighoyota Amori, Sunday declared that the former Governor of the state, Chief James Onanefe Ibori would return home before the end of December this year.

Amori who was speaking in Oghara during the 50th birthday celebration of the former Commissioner for Transport in the state, Mr Ben Igbakpa, said; “our leader, Chief James Onanefe Ibori will soon return to Oghara. “Chief James Onanefe Ibori will spend this year Christmas with us here,” urging the people to remain steadfast in their prayers for him. Insisting that “his coming is as certain as death, he said “we will all gather to give him a wonderful reception here in Oghara”. “And our lives will begin again once he returns back to the country, Amori said.

Recall that Chief James Onanefe Ibori is presently serving jail term in the United Kingdom on allegation of money laundry.

FCT Bans Cattle Grazing, Street Begging, Hawkers, Okada In Abuja

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Muhammad Bello has restated that begging, street hawking, cattle grazing and commercial motorcycle (Okada) remain banned. It said the ban must be enforced by the security agents.

Bello said this after an emergency FCT Security Committee meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, the FCT Administration will continue to collaborate with the security agencies to ensure that the ban is made effective.

We Support Finance Minister’s Call For Interest Rate Cut – Manufacturers

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to lower interest rate so government can borrow domestically to boost the economy without increasing debt costs.

While reacting to the minister’s call, the President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Frank Jacobs, said that a cut in interest rate would be the best thing to happen to the economy.

He said, “It will be the best thing that has ever happened to the economy, particularly the manufacturing sector. 

“It is what we have been agitating for since and if the interest rate is brought down, it will be the best decision in the current economic dispensation.”
