Tinie
Tempah is a British rapper who's pretty popular in his native country: His U.K.
chart-topping, double-platinum debut album Disc-Overy was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize, he
performed at Glastonbury and the Brit Awards, and he's probably the most
popular MC alive on the other side of the Atlantic at the moment. Here in
America, however, Tempah will forever be known as the dude who spent way too
much money to buy Back to the Future 2 sneakers.
According to TMZ,
when the first pair of the limited-edition Nike Mag kicks were auctioned off
last night for charity, Tempah's astounding bid of $37,500 easily won him a
pair of Marty McFly's shoes. That's some people's annual salary, spent on a
pair of (admittedly awesome) sneakers that light up. Tempah, a full-blown
sneakerhead, became enamored with the Nike Mag shoes and wouldn't stop bidding
until he secured them, but it was for a worthy cause: The Michael J. Fox
Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Only 1,500 Nike Mags were made, but Tempah
is the only one who can claim that he owns the FIRST pair. (That is, beside
Fox.)
Considering Tempah's "Written in the
Stars" is now breaking through on American radio, the rapper got a lot
more than just shoes for his $37,500; he's now receiving all the U.S. media
attention that previously eluded him and many more of his Brit-famous peers.Maybe Cheryl Cole should've
bought a pair.
