One of the west African country Sierra Leone is now overwhelmed with the outbreak of the Ebola virus as officials say the death toll from the contagious disease has doubled in one week, with hopes of containing the outbreak fading.Ebola is a rare but deadly infection that causes bleeding inside and outside the body. Ebola virus disease, kills up to 90% of people who are infected.You can get Ebola by coming into contact with the blood or body fluids of an animal or person who is infected.Currently there is no cure of this deadly Virus.
According to Channel News,Health ministry officials said at least 12 people had been killed by the deadly virus, up from six last week.Sierra Leone’s Director of Disease Prevention and Control, Amara Jambai, said all the confirmed deaths in Sierra Leone were in the east, mainly in the Kailahun district on the border with Guinea – the epicentre of the outbreak that has killed more than 200 people this year.
“It is very difficult for us to ascertain community deaths at this moment, but the 12 deaths are the ones the hospital can definitely confirm to have died of Ebola,” Jambai said.Jambai added that there were now 42 confirmed cases of Ebola from 113 people tested and new cases had been recorded in the northern district of Kambia. All suspected cases in Sierra Leone tested negative until last month and Jambai said that the disease was spreading as authorities are struggling to control the movement of people.International medical experts have been dispatched to Sierra Leone but they face a combination of poor existing health systems and tensions among locals fueled by the lack of understanding over the disease.There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola – one of the world’s deadliest viruses.The impoverished West African nation confirmed its first deaths from Ebola two weeks ago.
