PHOTOS: Nigeria Air Force Displays Weapon, Tests Locally Made Rockets

The Nigerian Air Force has successfully test-fired 30.1mm ground to air Inert Head Rockets locally produced by its Research and Development Team. The rockets were test fired during the Weapons Meet at Kwenev Air Range, Makurdi to commemorate its 53rd anniversary celebration.

Also produced by NAF R& D were the ground based rail launcher and vehicle mounted rail rocket launcher. The rocket launchers are fired through a remotely controlled firing based system.

Football Tragedy In Calabar: My Daughter Died For Football

The 14-year-old Blessing Okon Udo stepped into the viewing centre in Nyaghasang Community in Calabar on Thursday to watch Manchester United host Anderlecht in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League, not knowing it would be her last endeavour on earth.

She an ardent Manchester United fan, who loved playing football. Sadly, Blessing lost her life to a sport so close to her heart.

Father of the deceased, Okon Udo, tearfully narrated what happened: “I was away for work. When I came back, I understood there was a problem.

“From the information I heard, I heard 30 persons had died. I was rushing to see what had happened.

Whistle-Blowers Have Helped Us Recover N17bn – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,(EFCC) has recovered at least N17bn since the Federal Government introduced the whistle-blower policy on December 20, 2016.

Giving a breakdown of the recoveries, acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, said,
EFCC had recovered N521,815,000, $53,272,747, £122,890, and €547,730. According to a statement by the EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, Magu stated this at the 2017 Association of the National Accountants of Nigeria Week/Award Day, in Abuja on Saturday.

The EFCC boss said, “Apart from several other recoveries running into several billions of naira, the recent whistle-blower policy, has led to the recovery by EFCC of N521,815,000, $53,272,747, £122,890, and €547,730.”

RIP! Senator Isiaka Adeleke, First Governor Of Osun, Is Dead

Isiaka Adeleke, senator representing Osun west, is dead. He reportedly died on Sunday morning at Biket Hospital, Osogbo, after suffering a heart attack. His colleague at the senate, Shehu Sani, described the late Adeleke as a 'principled and responsible gentleman'.

Adeleke was elected first governor of Osun state in 1992 under Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Kaduna To Replace Firewood Use With Cooking Gas

Kaduna state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Andrew Nok, has said that the state government would phase out the use of firewood in its 29 boarding schools across the state.

Nok said that already contract had been awarded for the supply of cooking gas, burners, tanks, pots, boilers and other cooking equipment for distribution to the schools.

He made this known while receiving the second phase of the supplies at Queen Amina College Kaduna on Saturday.

Italian Cyclist Dies In Road Accident

Italian cyclist Michele Scarponi has died after being hit by a van while training on his bike.  The fatal crash happened on a crossroad near his home in central Italy today.

According to initial reports, Scarponi died on the spot and was unable to be revived by emergency services which arrived promptly.

"This is a tragedy too big to be written. We left a great champion and a special guy, always smiling in every situation, he was a real mile stone and a landmark for everyone in the Astana Pro Team," his team said.

The Italian was one of the most liked riders on the circuit and there was an outpouring of sympathy in the cycling world.

FRSC Boss Condemns Cutting Of Female Officials Hair

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Boboye Olayemi Oyeyemi, has condemned some photographs trending on the social media concerning the cutting-off of the hair of some female FRSC officials.

The photos, which started trending late Monday evening, show a man identified as the sector commander of the Rivers State Command of the FRSC, Andrew A. Kumapayi, using a pair of scissors to cut up the hair of some female officials.

The incident reportedly happened during the morning earlier in the day parade when Kumapayi went round to inspect his officers and men.

Bride Still Missing After Not Showing Up For Her Wedding

Forty-eight hours after the weeding between Miss Taiwo Orimoloye and Mr. Abiodun Isaac was stalled due to the alleged disappearance of the bride, the whereabouts of the bride is still unknown.

Taiwo failed to show up for the church service of her wedding ceremony on Saturday in Ondo town, thereby causing confusion for her family and the groom’s family.

Guests, who were said to have travelled from far places to witness the occasion, left the venue disappointed following the alleged disappearance of the bride.

A source in the groom’s family told Punch Metro that the bride did not show any sign that she would do such a thing, saying the incident was a shock to both families.

The governor of the conservative southern US state of Alabama resigned Monday, shortly after lawmakers began impeachment proceedings linked to his affair with a senior aide that was made public in humiliating detail.

Robert Bentley, 74, pleaded guilty in an agreement with prosecutors on Monday to two misdemeanor campaign violations and is barred from seeking public office again.

“I have spent the last year in deep and earnest prayer over our state and our people. I pray every morning for wisdom and guidance and forgiveness for the sins I have committed,” the former dermatologist and church deacon told a news conference announcing his resignation, never directly acknowledging his romantic relationship with 45-year-old political adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason.

Street Begging! Kano Arrests 489

The Kano State Hisbah Board said it had arrested 489 beggars in February and March for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.

Malam Musa Tsangaya, Head of the Anti-begging Unit of the board, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano that 192 of those arrested were children while 228 were adults.

“Our men arrested the street beggars around France Road, Dangi Junction, Lugard Road, Murtala Mohammed Way and Magwan Junction violating the law banning street begging in Kano metropolis.

Malala Yousafzai Receives Highest UN Honour

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai a UN Messenger of Peace on Monday to promote girls education, more than four years after a Taliban gunman shot her in the head on her school bus in 2012.

At 19, Yousafzai is the youngest Messenger of Peace, the highest honour given by the United Nations for an initial period of two years. She was also the youngest person to win the Nobel peace prize in 2014 when she was 17.

FRSC Boss Escapes Death During Official Duty

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Command, has warned the personnel of the Corps to be safety conscious by not stopping erring motorists by force.

Omeje told newsmen on Sunday that he was nearly killed by a commercial driver who faced him with his vehicle in an attempt to escape.

The commander said that the incident happened last march when he tried to stop a driver who was driving an overloaded commercial bus along Costain Area of the state.

“I sighted the commercial bus on Eko Bridge loaded with goods and passengers. Its state was dangerous to over road users that I could not over look it. I asked one of my officers to snap the vehicle while on motion.

“We decided to drive down to Costain Bus stop where we knew it would be safe for him to stop without causing traffic obstructions or endangering other people’s lives.

Notorious Criminal Terrorizing Ogun Arrested

A deadly criminal and land grabber has been arrested by the Ogun State police command with six guns and 75 live cartridges. The man was identified as Shakirudeen Shittu.

The state Police PRO, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, said the suspect was notorious and had been terrorising Ogijo and its environs.

Explaining more details, ASP Oyeyemi added that
Shittu was arrested by an anti-robbery team at Eyinogbe Isale area of Ogijo. He explained that investigation revealed that the suspect was involved in a series of land grabbing violence “which resulted into loss of life and wanton destruction of property”.

An Ikeja High Court has dismissed the suit filed by Mrs Taiwo Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, seeking postponement of the wedding of her son Olujonwo to Tope Adebutu. 

Justice Lateefa Okunnu dismissed the suit on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the suit because her son Olujonwo, 33, is an adult.

One Dead, Scores Injured As Lagos Continues Slum Demolition

At least one person was yesterday shot dead and scores injured after some men wearing uniforms of the Nigerian Police stormed Otodo-Gbame community in Lekki axis of Lagos State, demolished and set their structures ablaze displacing hundreds of residents left in the riverine community.

The deceased was identified as Daniel Anya while Monday Idowu, who was shot in the chest, is recuperating at the Lagos General hospital.

The State Government had on March 17, demolished several structures in the community, an action that prompted the residents to approach the court to seek injunction that will bar further demolition. Yesterday’s demolition came barely three weeks after the state government tried to justify the demolition of Otodo-Gbame community in Lekki axis, saying the residents were illegal occupants.

About 4,698 residents of the community were displaced.

President Muhammadu Buhari will formally launch his administration’s economic recovery and growth plan, ERGP, today Wednesday in Abuja.

The plan is part of efforts by the Buhari-led federal government to sustain and build on the successes so far recorded in tackling corruption, improving security and revamping the economy.

The medium-term ERGP, which had been approved by the Executive Council of the Federation, has amongst its broad strategic objectives, restoring sustainable, accelerated inclusive growth and development; investing in the people; and building a globally competitive economy.

FG Has No Plans To Sell National Theatre To Lagos Govt – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has no plans to sell the National Art Theatre to the Lagos State Government, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said.

Mohammed made this known on Tuesday night at a dinner with Nigerian TV and online content developers attending the ongoing MIPTV in Cannes, France.

Girls As Young As 9 Are Physically & Spiritually Ready For Marriage: Malaysian MP

A Malaysian MP said girls as young as nine were physically and spiritually ready for marriage, as the Muslim-majority Southeast Asian country passed a law on sexual offences against children without criminalising child marriage.

Tasek Gelugor, a member of the Barisan Nasional coalition, made the comments in response to a proposal by an opposition member of parliament to amend the Sexual Offences Against Children bill to include a ban on child marriages.

The proposal was voted down by the majority of parliament.

Police Arrests Violent Fulani Herdsmen In Benue State

A combined security team on Tuesday, April 4th, apprehended a contingent of violent Fulani herdsmen that have been causing mayhem in Benue State. This is coming days after suspected herdsmen ainvaded Ikyoawen in Moor District, Diiv and Alaba villages of Nzaav council wards, all in Turan, Kwande local councils of Benue State. Trump Pledges To Deal With North Korea With Or Without China

President Donald Trump signaled that he'd be willing to deal with the increasingly hostile country of North Korea unilaterally if China won't play ball.  'Well, if China is not going to solve North Korea, we will,' Trump said in a new interview with the Financial Times. 'That is all I am telling you.'

Trump will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Florida.

Asked if Trump would be able to cut a deal with the Chinese leader, Trump told the Financial Times that he has great 'respect' for both Xi and China.

'I would not be at all surprised if we did something that would be very dramatic and good for both countries and I hope so,' Trump explained.  Trump said he planned to bring up North Korea doing the two-day affair.

Tanker Drivers Begin Nationwide Indefinite Strike

Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, yesterday, directed members to begin nationwide indefinite strike and shut all loading depots and fuel terminals until further notice.

The workers are protesting non-renewal of their Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA, that expired three years ago, deplorable conditions of nation’s high ways, alleged harassment by security, especially Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and plans by Capital Oil Plc to declare 2000 members redundant due to its unresolved issue with Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC.

National Chairman of PTD, Mr. Salimon Oladiti, told Vanguard, yesterday, that there was no going back on the strike as it was decided by the organs of the union. According to him, the strike will be total as loading depots and fuel terminals nationwide will be shut down.

House of Rep Agrees To Increase Looters Jail Term 20 years

The House of Representatives wants persons convicted of economic and financial crimes to be sent to jail for at least 20 years.

This is part of details of new amendments to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act.

For now the Act prescribes a penalty of “not less than 2 years” for economic and financial crimes.

Lawmakers consider this to be “lenient” for the serious crime of stealing public money or other forms of financial crimes being committed by looters.

Four consolidated bills before the House are seeking to further empower the EFCC to fight crime, insulate the anti-graft agency from interference by the Presidency and enhance its autonomy.

Ifeanyi Ubah Speaks Again, Admits DSS Invited Him

The Group Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has said that he reports at the headquarters of the Department of State Services in Abuja daily and that he is not being detained.

Ubah, who spoke in a telephone interview with a Punch correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, said that the DSS was mediating in a financial dispute he had with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

When he spoke with the Punch correspondent, he said he was on his way to the DSS office, where he said there would be a reconciliation meeting between him and the officials of the NNPC.

Meningitis: FG Procures 500,000 Doses Of Vaccine

Following the spread of Cerebrospinal Meningitis, CSM, in the country, the Federal Government has secured 500,000 doses of meningococcal vaccine from the World Health Organisation, WHO, to tackle the outbreak in Zamfara and Katsina states, while additional 800,000 units are expected from the British government.

Over the weekend, the Federal Ministry of Health issued a public advisory confirming 328 deaths from 2,524 infected persons in 99 local government areas in 16 states of the country. It was stated that a total of 131 samples had been confirmed in the laboratory, of which a majority are Neisseria Meningitides type C.

Disclosing this in a statement, Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, said by Tuesday (tomorrow), there would be a meeting with the International Review Group of WHO to request approval for additional vaccines, as part of practical and medically certified efforts to stem the ugly incident.
