Legendary Super Eagles Player Dejo Fayemi Dies At 83

Former Super Eagles and Shooting Stars player who is the first Nigerian to play at the old Highbury Stadium of Arsenal Football Club of England, has passed away.

According to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), former IICC Shooting Stars and Red Devils (now Super Eagles) striker, Dejo Fayemi is dead. He died on Friday morning at his residence situated at Odo-Ona Elewe, Ibadan, at the age of 83. He was part of the National team when they were referred to as the Red Devils, and was among the first set of Nigerians who travelled to England to play football just after Independence.

In 1961, Fayemi wrecked the Independence celebration for Sierra Leone with his goal in a match to mark the country’s attainment of a republic.

He had seven goals to show after his last international cap against Morocco in 1964 where Nigeria lost 2-1.

Pa Fayemi inspired the Ibadan Lions to win the then Challenge Cup in 1959 and 1961 after losing in the 1960 final.

He also played professional football during his stay in the United Kingdom for further studies before he retired from active football in the early 1970s.
