Ebola kills Ugandan Doctor In Liberia


 


As the spread of Ebola Virus increases,a Ugandan doctor in Liberia Samuel Muhumuza Mutoro has succumbed to the virus in the process of offering medical care to patients in the West African country.Dr Muhumuza died on Tuesday afternoon and was buried on Wednesday, according to his colleague, Dr Ayella Ataro, a Medical Director with Last Mile Health (an NGO) Liberia.“By the time I left Liberia (Tuesday evening), arrangements were being made to have him (Dr Muhumuza) buried. His family has also been notified,” Dr Ataro said on Wednesday in a telephone interview.

Dr Muhumuza, from Kasese District, Western Uganda had worked in Liberia for the last three years.When contacted on phone on Wednesday, the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) publicist, Dr Ekwaro A. Obuku said Dr Muhumuza was the third Ugandan doctor to die of Ebola.“This is the third Ugandan doctor to die of Ebola after Dr Lukwiya and a colleague from Bundibugyo,” Dr Obuku said.Dr Matthew Lukwiya, died in Lacor Hospital in 2000 during the first ever outbreak of the disease in Uganda.

Dr Kule Jonah of Bundibugyo became the second and died in Mulago Hospital in 2007, along four other medical workers during the second Ebola outbreak in Uganda after contracting the disease from patients in Bundibugyo District.Liberia’s Health ministry said on Monday that the country had recorded 49 deaths caused by the deadly Ebola virus, 26 of which were confirmed by laboratory tests.The outbreak in West Africa is already the deadliest on record, killing 367 people according to the latest World Health Organisation numbers. Most deaths have been in Guinea where cases were first reported.
